History

(1873) - The property of William Budd on Main St, Blackwood, was destroyed by fire. This property was located on the north side of the building now owned and partially occupied by Milano's Barber Shop. As a result of this fire loss in the center of Blackwood, a group of men met in the lecture room of the local Presbyterian Church.  This meeting was held to discuss the means and methods to protect life and property if and when there was a fire. The rev. F.R. Brace and Mr. Cornelius G. Hagerman, the local store keeper (who's store had Blackwood's first telephone exchange system), were elected Chairman and Secretary, respectively. A committee composed of Elmer Wilson, C.G, Hagerman, Joseph Williams, Thomas J. Wentz, Sr., and R. Cooper Morgan was appointed to devise ways and means to establish an organized concerted effort to fight fire.

(1893) - On December 26, after hearing the committee's report, Hope Fire Co. #1 of Blackwood was organized. On January 6, 1894, the second meeting was held in which subscriptions were authorized and solicited among the residents for the purchasing of fire equipment. According to the minutes, $90.00 was subscribed at the meeting, which was about $5-$10 per person. The equipment purchased consisted of a hand-operated pumper with 500 feet of leather hose, and a ladder drawn on a truck by man power, which was later changed to be horse drawn. Also purchased was a hose carriage, several dozen buckets, fire hooks, axes, and oil lanterns.

(1894) - On May 17, the charter was complete and signed, and a fire district had been established. Proceeds from entertainment, suppers, and card parties helped offset some of the expenses. These events gave the women a chance to help in the cause and create social activities in the community. Soon a building committee was appointed and authorized to erect a building not to exceed the cost of $75.00 to house its first equipment. Mr. Thomas Wentz Sr. donated land for the site of the building for as long as it was used as a firehouse. In 1908, this building was moved across the street to the north side of Cleveland Avenue to a plot of land donated by J. William Morgan. The first motorized equipment was housed in this building, which has been converted to a residence.

(1912) - Two chemical tanks mounted on a two-wheeled hand-drawn carriage was purchased. These tanks were later transferred to the first motorized truck and were later replaced by water tanks. The cost of the water tanks was $106.95.

(1917) - The name of the company was changed from Hope Fire Company to Blackwood Fire Company#1. A new four cylinder Studebaker chassis was purchased through the late E. Frank Pine Sr., who was an active member of the company. Arthur Beetle Sr. was the first driver of the apparatus.

(1921) - The population was growing in the town of Blackwood and there was a need for expansion of the fire company. In April of that year it was decided to build a larger fire house on Central Avenue, which is still our present location. The purchase price for the land was $600 and the concrete block building totaled about $8500. The siren cost $325. Subscriptions were taken for the purchase of the concrete blocks and a donation in the amount of $919.66 was received from the proceeds of a lake carnival held by the Blackwood Lake Improvement Association. This left the company with a mortgage of $4000 and a bank note of $800.

(1924) - The first meeting was held in the new fire house.

(1927) - The Gloucester Township Committee recognized a need for financial aid for more modern and efficient apparatus/equipment for the fire companies within the township.

(1929) - The fire company received a new Studebaker pumper with a 500 gallon water tank.

(1937) - The company purchased a used Ford truck chassis and mounted on it the original water tank.

(1948) - A used 1942 Jeep with a 100 gallon water tank was purchased. This vehicle, because of its maneuverability, proved its value in the company.

(1950) - The Township Committee purchased an International 600 gallon pumper for the fire company.

(1954) - The company purchased an International chassis in which the 500 gallon pump was transferred from the 1929 Studebaker. In addition to the 500 gallon pump, an 800 gallon tank was added to the new chassis.

(1956) - The company purchased an International combination emergency / ladder truck. The ladder was a power operated 50ft extension type.

(1961) - A GMC, which had a V6 motor, 750 gallon pump, and a 1000 gallon tank was placed in service.

(1973) - The fire company had a total equipment inventory of the following: a 1961 GMC, a 1964 Hahn pumper, a 1968 International emergency / ladder vehicle, a 1956 Dodge power wagon, and a 1971 utility van.

(1974) - A Chevrolet mini-pumper was purchased. The two bay addition to Central Avenue fire station and a sub-station on Blackwood-Clementon Road were dedicated.

(1976) - The company purchased a Great Eastern 1000 GPM pumper.

(1977) - A 1500 GPM Pierce Pumper, a 85 foot, Pierce Snorkel and a Ford F250 Brush / Utility truck were purchased. On July 13, 1977, fire struck the Central Avenue Fire House. Damage included the loss of 3 trucks and 3/4 of the station.

(1979) - The rebuilding of the Central Avenue station occurred with it being dedicated in 1981.

(1985-1989) - Twin Hahn 1500 GPM pumpers were purchased. An EMS engine program was initiated and the company purchased equipment to perform rescues from motor vehicle accidents. In 1989, the company purchased the FM 84 vehicle  and the Chief's vehicle was purchased in 1990.

(1993) - Blackwood Fire Company celebrated its 100th anniversary.

(1994) - The company purchased Engine 841 and Engine 842.

(1996) - The company purchased Rescue 846 and replaced command 848.
