- At 7:38 pm, Rescue 84 was dispatched to the
area of College Dr. and Broadacres Dr. for a reported motor vehicle accident.
Battalion 84 (Asst. Chief Robb) arrived to find a car that had severed a
utility pole. Rescue 84 arrived shortly after and provided scene
lighting while the GTPD investigated and took pictures of the accident. mde available at 8:07 pm.
WORK IN MILLBRIDGE
APARTMENTS
12/11/2011

At 2:29 pm, Task Force 821 (Chews Landing) was
dispatched for a reported apartment fire in the Millbridge Garden
Apartments. Engine 842 responded and reported that they could see a
column of smoke coming from the apartment complex as they were leaving the
station. Engine 842 quickly arrived on location and reported a two story
garden style apartment with heavy smoke showing from division c. 842's
crew secured its own water supply and stretched an 1 3/4" hose line into the
second floor apartment. 8401 (Chief Phillips) arrived shortly after,
assumed command as 820 and struck the all hands box. Ladder 84 arrived
as the first in truck company and split its crew, as three firefighters went
inside to hook the ceiling and two firefighters stayed outside to set up the
truck and perform outside ventilation. Engine 841 assisted with water
supply and outside ventilation with Ladder 84's crew. The fire was
contained with two hose lines and crews were released from the fireground
around 5:00 pm. Four civilians were treated for smoke inhalation and one
firefighter was treated for burns. The cause of the fire is being
investigated by FM82 and the Camden County Fire Marshal's Office.

CAR FIRE IN KMART PARKING
LOT

At 4:46 pm, Station 84 was dispatched to 1468
Blackwood-Clementon Road for a reported car fire in the Kmart parking lot,
behind Station 84's substation. Camden County
Communications advised incoming companies that police were on location
reporting a fully involved vehicle. Engine 842 quickly arrived,
confirmed the report and
extinguished the fire along with Engine 841. The company was made
available at 5:18 pm.
LATE NIGHT CRASH ON RT. 42
11/25/2011
- Just after midnight, Station 84 and Station 93 (GC Deptford) were dispatched
to mile marker 11.0 northbound on Rt. 42 for a reported motor vehicle
accident. Gloucester County EMS 9 arrived on location and reported a
seven car accident with one minor injury. Battalion 84 (Captain Shrader) arrived
shortly after, established Rt. 42 command and confirmed the report of a seven
car accident. Rescue 84, Engine 842, Rescue 93 and Engine 93 safed the
batteries of cars involved in the accident and applied oil dry around the
vehicles. One victim was transported by EMS to the hospital with minor
injuries. The companies were released at 12:32 am.

DWELLING FIRE IN GLENDORA
11/24/2011
- As most Thanksgiving gatherings were
finishing up, Task Force 81 (Glendora) was dispatched for a reported
dwelling fire at 201 Fourth Avenue in Glendora. Camden County
Communications advised that an off duty firefighter was on location
advising that smoke was showing from the house. 8101 (Chief Ricciardelli)
arrived shortly after and reported heavy smoke from the dwelling and
struck the all hands box. At 7:55 pm, Rescue 84 was dispatched on
the all hands box as the RIT and responded with Battalion 84 (Captain Shrader).
Rescue 84's crew stood by near the command post on the bravo side of the
house. 8401 (Chief Phillips) was assigned to the interior and assisted
with primary and secondary searches. The company was made available
at 8:45 pm.
DUMP TRUCK ACCIDENT
ON RT. 42
10/22/2011
- At 6:30 am,
Station 84 and Station 93 (GC Deptford) were dispatched to exit 12
northbound on Rt. 42 for a reported motor vehicle accident.
Initial reports advised that a dump truck was on it side on the right
side of the highway just prior to exit 12. Battalion 84 (Captain
Shrader) arrived and confirmed the report of a dump truck on its side
and said the driver had self extricated and denied medical attention.
Rescue 84, Engine 842, Rescue 93 and Engine 93 cleaned up fluids around
the dump truck and were released from the scene at 7:03 am.

- Members of
Blackwood Fire Company along with other Gloucester Township
firefighters, police and EMS personnel attended a ceremony at Chews
Landing Fire Department (Station 82) to remember the first responders
who lost their lives on 9/11. Station 82 unveiled a piece of World
Trade Center steel that was recovered from Ground Zero. All in
attendance paid their respects to the members of the FDNY, NYPD and PAPD
who lost their lives ten years ago.
RESCUE 84 RUNS 2ND
ALARM RIT IN LINDENWOLD
8/28/2011 - During the height
of Hurricane Irene with three crews in station, Rescue 84 was dispatched
at 3:10 am on the 2nd alarm to Jersey's Pub in Lindenwold (District 63).
Rescue 84 responded immediately with six members and was assigned as the
2nd FAST team at the rear of the building. Rescue 84 remained on
location for 2 1/2 hours before returning to service.

third child into the world. Logan James weighed in at 8 pounds, 3

Bradley Thomas Calhoun, 5 year old son of Tara and Tom and brother
of Melani, who passed away on Saturday, July 2nd due to an accident
while swimming.Tom is
an active member and past Chief of the Bellmawr Fire Company.Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to his entire
family.
Tom pointed out
that drowning is the 2nd leading cause of death among
children under 15 years of age, and has made a commitment to raise
public awareness about swimming safety.It is Tom’s goal to move drowning down to 100th

–At approximately 1:05 am, a task force box was dispatched for a
reported dwelling fire at the Tall Pines Condominium Complex in Pine
Hill.A total of 6
members were conducting an overnight in-house duty crew, and
responded immediately with L-84, along with Battalion 84 (Captain
Maschke).Pine Hill
units arrived and reported a working fire in the second floor
heater room.Upon
arrival, the crew of L-84 split up, with the inside crew assisting
fire attack by hooking ceilings and walls.The outside crew performed outside vent, threw ladders and
set up scene lighting.L-84
was set up on the Bravo side and prepared for roof access and/or an
elevated stream, neither of which was needed.Battalion 84 directed operations in Division C.Crews remained on location assisting with overhaul until
released at approximately 2:30 am.
ELECTRICAL FIRE CAUSES
PARTIAL HOSPITAL EVACUATION
7/7/2011
– As a heavy thunderstorm passed through the area in the early
evening, a task force box was dispatched for a building fire at the
Camden County Health Services Center in the Lakeland section of
Gloucester Township.Responding
units were advised of a transformer fire inside the building.L-84 arrived first, followed closely by Squad 85 and 8501
(Chief Goins).Units
found medium smoke showing from the main electrical room in the rear
of the building.The
fire was confined to one large transformer in the room with no
extension.However, it
was soon learned the fire had damaged the main electrical service to
the building, resulting in a total loss of power.The maintenance staff estimated it could take up to 48 hours
to restore power.The
hospital administrative staff then determined it would be necessary
to evacuate the 400+ patients from the hospital.Numerous fire, EMS and police agencies from Camden and
Gloucester Counties assisted with moving the patients over the next
several hours to the Camden County Emergency Services Training
Center and the Ann Mullen School.Partial power was restored to the building later in the
night, avoiding the need to evacuate all the patients.Fire department personnel cleared the scene at approximately
1:00 am.

– During the early evening hours, the Task Force 82 box was
transmitted for a dwelling fire on LaCosta Drive in the Links at
Valleybrook development.First
arriving units reported a working attic fire.L-84 members assisted E-82’s crew inside by hooking the
ceiling, while E-842 pumped a supply line to L-84 and staffed L-84’s

- Captain Keith Kemery completed his last tour of duty today as a career
firefighter with Gloucester Township Fire District #4.Captain Kemery joined the Blackwood Fire Company in 1982 and
served in various volunteer positions, including Company President,
Lieutenant and Captain.In
1991, Captain Kemery was hired by the Board of Fire Commissioners as a
career firefighter.During
his career, Captain Kemery served as a Firefighter, Fire Official and
Career Captain.The members

training at the Camden County Fire Academy.The intensive, state certified course is over 120 hours long,
covers all aspects of basic firefighting, and involves both academic and
practical training. A
special congratulations goes to FF Sean Carlin, who received the
Jim Sylvester Award for academic excellence.This award is named after Chief Jim Sylvester of the Mount
Ephraim Fire Department, who was killed in the line of duty at the
tragic Gloucester City fire on July 4, 2002.Congratulations to Kyle, Alex and Sean on their impressive
accomplishment.
DAYTIME WORK AT BLACKWOOD
APARTMENTS
6/20/2011
– At approximately 11:30 am the Blackwood and Chews Landing Fire
Companies, along with Gloucester Township EMS, were dispatched to the
Blackwood Apartments on Prospect Avenue for a reported apartment fire.Based on multiple calls reporting a working fire, the “second
source" companies were added, bringing additional units from the
Lambs Terrace, Blenheim, Pine Hill and Deptford Fire Departments.Ladder 84, Engine 841 and Engine 821 arrived to find heavy smoke
and fire issuing from one apartment.The crew of E-821 attacked the fire, while E-841’s crew vented
the building.L-62 arrived
and vented the roof.The
fire was quickly extinguished, with no extension beyond the original
fire apartment.There were
no injuries.The cause of
the fire is being investigated by the Gloucester Township District 4
Fire Investigator and the Camden County Fire Marshal’s Office.

IN CAMDEN CITY
6/19/2011
– At approximately 5:15 am a fire broke out in a large, abandoned
commercial building in the 1600 block of Federal Street in Camden City.The fire quickly spread throughout the building and the incident
commander realized more water was needed to fight the fire.Just before 6:00 am, the 5” Hose Strike Team (Pipeline A) was
dispatched.Engine 841
responded with the strike team.The
companies laid approximately 2800’ of 5” supply line from a hydrant
near State Street and River Road to the front of the fire building.The water provided by the strike team supplied several master
streams on the fireground.The
fire was contained to the original fire building and was placed under
control around 9:00 am.The strike team companies were released from the scene at
approximately 2:00 pm.

ALARM FIRE IN CAMDEN CITY

– In the early morning hours, a fire broke out in a large
vacant building at S. 4th Street and Jefferson Street in the
City of Camden.At 3:20 am,
Engine 841 was dispatched to the fire as part of the Pipeline A 5”
Hose Strike Team.The
Pipeline team laid two 5” supply lines from the Delaware River to
provide much needed water to fight the fire.The 5” lines were supplied by the Philadelphia Fire
Department’s Fire Boat.Engine
841 was positioned at the end of the lay and supplied water to three
ground mounted master streams.Members
remained on location until being released at approximately 11:50 am.
LADDER 84 RESPONDS TO 12
ALARM FIRE IN CAMDEN CITY
6/9/2011
– At about 4:30 pm on a hot, sweltering day, a massive fire broke out
in a vacant building at Chestnut and Orchard Streets in the City of
Camden.The fire was
rapidly spreading to other buildings and dwellings in the area and calls
for assistance were made to numerous fire departments in Camden,
Burlington and Gloucester Counties.Ladder 84 was dispatched at 4:58 pm on the 6th alarm
as part of a Ladder Strike Team.Five
members were in station and responded immediately.The ladder was directed to the area of Chestnut Street and Mount
Ephraim Avenue, where they set up and were supplied with a 4” supply
line.The crew, working in extreme heat from both the weather and
the radiant heat of the fire, placed elevated and ground level master
streams in service and assisted the many brave firefighters on the scene
in preventing the fire from engulfing the entire neighborhood.Ladder 84 remained on location until being released at
approximately 1:40 am on Friday morning.

– In the early morning hours, Gloucester Township Police requested
assistance from the fire company with a large tree that fell, blocking
all lanes of the Black Horse Pike in the area of the Foxcroft
Apartments.L-84, R-84,

utilized the winch on R-84 to move the tree off the roadway.

– Blackwood Firefighters responded on
a task force box for a reported dwelling fire on Dickinson Drive in the
Sicklerville section of Gloucester Township Saturday night.Squad 85 and 8501 (Chief Goins) arrived to find a kitchen fire.The fire was quickly extinguished with one 1 ¾” handline.Station 84 apparatus (E-842, L-84, 8401 and B-84) were released a

injury crash on Route 42 northbound at milepost 10.4.Chief Phillips arrived to find a two vehicle crash with one

assisted EMS with an injured driver and spread oil dry on spilled

Blackwood firefighters responded late Thursday afternoon to an injury
crash on West Church Street in the area of the Blackwood Lake.Upon arrival, members found a pickup truck that had left the
roadway and struck a building.EMS
personnel were treating a seriously injured female who had reportedly
been ejected from the vehicle.At
the request of paramedics, a landing zone was established at the
Prospect Avenue ball field.The injured female was transported to Cooper Trauma Center
via helicopter.The driver
of the vehicle was taken into custody by police.

– On Wednesday evening, members of the Blackwood Fire Company,
along with Gloucester Township EMS and West Jersey Medics, were
dispatched to the 500 block of East Lake Avenue for an injury crash.8401 (Chief Phillips) arrived to find a two vehicle crash
with one vehicle overturned.Further
investigation revealed an adult female and an infant had already
exited the overturned vehicle with assistance from nearby residents.Both were transported to the hospital by EMS.FD members de-energized both vehicles, spread oil dry on
spilled fluids, and stood by until the overturned vehicle was
uprighted by the tow company.

EXTRICATION TRAINING

- Members of the Blackwood and Chews Landing Fire Departments recently
completed a 24 hour Vehicle Extrication 1 training program presented
by instructors from the Gloucester County Fire Training Academy.The joint training venture not only resulted in a cost saving
for each department, but also forged a closer working relationship
between the attending members.We would like to thank the members of the Chew Landing Fire
Department for their cooperation, and the instructors for sharing
their knowledge and experience with our members.A special thanks goes to the owners of Washington Recovery,
who provided training vehicles and allowed us to use their property
for the practical portion of the training.
MAYOR MAYER ATTENDS COMPANY

- Members of the Blackwood Fire Company conducted their weekly drill
at the Camden County Fire Training Academy, where they utilized the roof
simulator to hone their vertical ventilation skills.This task involves creating an opening in the roof of a burning
structure to allow heat and smoke to escape, making it easier for
firefighters to enter the structure to search for occupants and
extinguish the fire.The
members of the company would like to thank Gloucester Township Mayor
David Mayer for attending the drill to observe firsthand the skill and
dedication of our members.A
special thanks goes to the mayor for treating the members to his
homemade chili after the drill.
