FIREFIGHTER 1 GRADUATION
|
12/14/2007-
The Camden County Fire
Academy held their Annual Firefighter I graduation last night at Station
33. Firefighters Jim Anderson, Jr, Bill Prendergast, Donna Harding, Jason
Ferguson and Joe Eden all officially graduated from Firefighter I during
this ceremony. The Instructional staff referenced many times during the
evening the sacrifice and hard work that is required to complete the 8
long weekends or even more grueling 42 week night course. Congratulations
to Jim, Bill, Donna, Jason and Joe for persevering and completing this
demanding course.
Once again a
Blackwood Firefighter was a recipient of an achievement award.
Firefighter Joseph Eden received the James Sylvester Award for Academic
Achievement. Each year that the Sylvester and West awards have been
presented, a Blackwood Firefighter has received one. This is a
combination of that member’s individual desire to excel and the work that
our members put in to help our Firefighter I students. It is a testament
to the culture of training that exists in our organization.
Firefighter Frank
Reiss was also recognized at this ceremony. Frank received one of only
two awards for training achievement. The Camden County Hero Scholarship
Organization presented their Training Achievement Award to Frank for
completing over 400 hrs of in service training. |

SMALL FIRE SENDS ONE TO
COOPER
|
09/22/2007-
In the early morning hours,
Stations 84, 82 and 83 were dispatched to Buttonwood Village apartments
for an apartment fire with a reported burn victim. Upon arrival of
8401 (Carlin) he reported nothing showing. L-84 arrived moments
later and were sent to investigate. L-84's crew found a mattress
fire that has apparently been extinguished and an adult female with
second/third degree burns on her arm. E-841 took the hydrant and
R-84 lighted the scene. 840 returned all units with the exception of
Station 84. The patient was rushed to Cooper Trauma, while L-84's
crew wet down the mattress and removed it to the exterior. Again,
the burned female, instead of calling 911, called her mother who
subsequently contacted the Police who then reported the fire. This
delay could have resulted in a tragic loss of life and property.
Residents are urged to call emergency services as soon as an emergency is
discovered. The fire is under investigation by CFM1 and FM84.

TASK FORCE "F" TO WATERFORD,
LADDER 84 GOES TO WORK
|
04/30/2007-
At 0013, Task Force "F" was
dispatched into Waterford Township and
moved up as a result of a building fire at 2136 Atco Avenue that was
impinging upon and endangering two large single family dwellings. The
purpose of the task force response was twofold, one to move an assortment
of fire and rescue equipment into close proximity to provide assistance if
needed and if assistance was not required to provide fire and rescue
coverage for the areas who had depleted their resources in the effort to
battle this blaze. Camden County Regional Task Force “F” normally
consists of a truck company from Blackwood Fire Company (Ladder 84) three
engines, one each from Glendora Fire Company, (Engine 812), Erial Fire
District #6 (Engine 862) and Runnemede Fire Company (Engine 753) and a
rescue company from Chews Landing Fire Department (Rescue 82). Due to the
large areas in Waterford Township that have no hydrant systems, Burlington
County Tender 2816 (Indian Mills Fire Company), was added to the task
force for this assignment. No calls for service were responded to by
the task force but at 0142 hours, Ladder 84 and Engine 753 were special
called into the job to assist with overhauling the large garage that had
collapsed. At 0152, Tender 2816 was also placed in service at the scene to
provide the final water required to completely extinguish this blaze. With
the tender now in service, the companies involved in establishing the
original water supply were provided with the opportunity to pick up their
hose and equipment and return to their quarters. The task force was
released at 0250 hours. Engine 753 and Ladder 84 were released at 0300
hours. |

ONE FIRE SPRINKLER HEAD STOPS HOUSE FIRE
|
** A HOME BURNS EVERY 79 SECONDS IN AMERICA **
** 3,000 PEOPLE DIE EVERY YEAR IN HOME FIRES **
** NEARLY 14,000 PEOPLE ARE INJURED IN HOME
FIRES EVERY YEAR **
On
April 25, 2007, fire units from Blackwood, Chews Landing
and Erial responded to a reported dwelling fire at 2049 Broad Acres
Drive. Responding firefighters arrived to find that a single automatic
fire suppression sprinkler head extinguished a fire on the second floor of
a three story single family town home located on the end of a six unit
row. No one was home at the time of the fire.
Smoke
and fire damage was limited to several floor tiles under a burned portable
fan. Firefighters placed salvage covers to minimize water damage. A
wedding album in the same room as the fire required drying out but was
saved from certain destruction by the sprinkler system. If not for the
fire suppression sprinkler system, this fire would have grown and spread
unchecked, destroying anything and anyone in its path.
For
approximately $2 per square foot, or less than the cost of a typical
carpet upgrade, automatic fire suppression sprinkler systems can contain
and often extinguish a fire in its early stages, before deadly heat and
smoke build up.
The
following is the average fire death and dollar damage rate in the 15 years
since Scottsdale, Arizona passed an ordinance requiring fire sprinkler
systems within every new home.

|
04/13/2007-
On
Friday, at 1542 hours, the Blackwood Fire Company (Rescue 84), the Chews
Landing Fire Company (Rescue 82), the Blenheim Fire Company (Engine 83)
the Gloucester Township Emergency Medical Alliance (Squad 805), the Virtua
Health Systems Mobile Intensive Care Unit (Medic 42), along with the New
Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Department of Transportation
Emergency Services Patrol Unit were dispatched to New Jersey State Highway
42 (N.J.S.H. #42) in the area of mile post 9.2 northbound for a reported
motor vehicle crash. Chief John Vannoni (8401) arrived to find a two
vehicle crash involving a compact vehicle and a full size van in the
northbound shoulder and lane #3. Both drivers and sole occupants of the
involved vehicles were heavily entrapped and seriously injured. An
additional rescue and an additional engine were requested from Deptford
Township. An additional two (2) basic life support (B.L.S.) units and an
additional M.I.C.U. (Medic 44) were requested. R-84 arrived first and was
assigned to operate on the compact vehicle. R-82 arrived second and was
assigned to operate on the van. Engine 842 arrived third and was assigned
to operate as the fire suppression group. Rescue 938 was assigned to
assist with the van operation and Engine 821 was assigned to assist the
fire suppression group. All other responding units were staged off the
highway. The driver of the compact car was disentangled, packaged and
turned over to the awaiting B.L.S. unit approximately twenty (20) minutes
after dispatch and was later transported by ambulance to Cooper Trauma
Center in Camden, NJ. The driver of the van was disentangled, packaged
and turned over to the awaiting B.L.S. unit approximately 31 minutes after
dispatch and was later transported by ambulance to Cooper Trauma Center in
Camden, NJ. Several five gallon gasoline cans had apparently been being
transported in the rear of the van which had leaked in the van and also
had been ejected from the van onto the highway creating an obvious hazard.
E-842 provided fire suppression protection through a charged 1 ¾” hose
line, portable extinguishers and a TFT Foam ProPak. A unified command
system was established to ensure clear and immediate communications
between the numerous groups and disciplines operating at this incident.
Traffic diversion was established by the NJ DOT Emergency Services Unit.
The cause of this crash is being investigated by Troopers of the NJSP,
assigned to the Bellmawr Barracks. Fire company resources cleared the
scene at 1638 hours. |
 |
 |
|
All northbound lanes of NJSH #42 were
closed to provide a safe area of operation at this incident. A published
standard operational guideline adopted by police, fire, EMS and Department
of Transportation personnel facilitate an efficient and coordinated effort
at incidents on state highways in this area of South Jersey. See the
March issue of Fire Engineering (page#163) for an article describing these
efforts. |

OIL SPILL CAUSES CRASH;
SHUTS DOWN PIKE FOR HOURS
|
3/20/2007-
At 1110, a passing
motorist advised personnel at the Central Avenue station that the Black
Horse Pike was covered with oil and that a trash truck was parked to the
rear of the Eckert Drugs leaking oil. Personnel in quarters had also
monitored radio traffic to which indicated Glendora Fire Company had been
dispatched to a highway hazard in their local response district at the
Walgreens Pharmacy. 8401 responded to investigate the report prior to
having the company dispatched. 8401 arrived at the Eckert Drugs to
confirm a refuse hauling truck was present and leaking hydraulic fluid.
The driver had placed absorbent pads and socks under the truck and
indicated he was notifying his supervisor and a cleanup crew. The driver
indicated his last stop was at the Wawa in Chews Landing and he had
traveled south on the BHP to his current location. GTPD were notified and
arrived on location to secure the scene. R-84 responded to assist the
driver with preventing the spill from spreading. 8401 proceeded
north on the BHP to investigate and immediately was presented with an
obvious oil spill, which ran along the southbound lane of the BHP. Police
were aware of the situation and were coordinating traffic control and had
requested a sand truck from the NJ DOT. Upon arriving in the area of
Almonesson Road 8401 witnessed a vehicle spin out and strike a utility
pole. R-84 was requested to respond to the scene of the crash; E-841 was
assigned to the Eckert Drugs. 1 BLS unit assigned to crash transported 1
adult and 2 minor patients. P.S.E. & G. advised of impact with pole by
C.C. Communications. An Incident Command Post was established at
Almonesson Road at the BHP. NJDOT applied sand to mitigate slipping hazard
along the highway. R-84 constructed a dike around one storm sewer
inlet on Clementon Avenue just off the BHP to prevent any contaminated
runoff (melting snow) from entering culvert. There was no evidence
indicating any oil had entered the sewer system. FD crews cleared
the scene at 1205, the Pike remained closed for hours after. |
