ALL HANDS BUILDING FIRE

12/29/2007- At 0930, Engine 84 was dispatched to 2 N. Black Horse Pike for a smoke investigation.  Upon arrival of 8401 (Carlin), he found an intermittent audible alarm sounding and the unmistakable smell of a working job.  He requested the box be filled bringing Stations 82 and 83.  Engine 842 arrived first due, secured their own water supply, and were ordered to send the crew forward to locate the fire.  The fire was found to be in 6-A North Black Horse Pike.  This structure is a "tax payer" (commercial store front with 2nd floor apartments).  8401 then requested the "All Hands" be struck.  Station 86 advised they had a crew in quarters and were advised to respond.  L-84 arrived and were sent to C division to assist the engine crew in opening up the rear.  E-842s crew found heavy smoke banked to the floor of the apartment.  They made entry, searched for victims, and put a quick hit on the bedroom fire.  L-82 arrived and were sent to assist in hooking the ceilings to ensure the fire didn't grab hold of the structure.  Interior reported no extension and the assignment was scaled back to Stations 84 and 82.  After overhaul, Station 82 was made available leaving E-842 and L-84 to assist Local and County Fire Marshals with the investigation.  One GTPD officer was transported to a local area hospital for an eye injury.

COVER ASSIGNMENT

Deptford Township companies were battling a building fire at their Oak Valley Station (9-1).  Our best wishes go out to Oak Valley Fire Department and their firefighters during this difficult time.

FIREFIGHTER 1 GRADUATION

12/14/2007-  The Camden County Fire Academy held their Annual Firefighter I graduation last night at Station 33.  Firefighters Jim Anderson, Jr, Bill Prendergast, Donna Harding, Jason Ferguson and Joe Eden all officially graduated from Firefighter I during this ceremony.  The Instructional staff referenced many times during the evening the sacrifice and hard work that is required to complete the 8 long weekends or even more grueling 42 week night course. Congratulations to Jim, Bill, Donna, Jason and Joe for persevering and completing this demanding course.

Once again a Blackwood Firefighter was a recipient of an achievement award.  Firefighter Joseph Eden received the James Sylvester Award for Academic Achievement.  Each year that the Sylvester and West awards have been presented, a Blackwood Firefighter has received one.  This is a combination of that member’s individual desire to excel and the work that our members put in to help our Firefighter I students.  It is a testament to the culture of training that exists in our organization.

Firefighter Frank Reiss was also recognized at this ceremony.  Frank received one of only two awards for training achievement.  The Camden County Hero Scholarship Organization presented their Training Achievement Award to Frank for completing over 400 hrs of in service training.

FAST, WET START TO THE WEEKEND

10/27/2007-  Heavy and steady rain contributed to a busy start for the weekend.  At 1230 on Friday the Rescue responded to the freeway for a highway hazard, at 1900 we headed to Pine Hill for a house fire on W. Seventh Ave, companies were recalled prior to arrival.  At 2115 we were back on the highway for a “brush” fire in heavy rain, the call was unfounded.  At 2202 the crew in station began monitoring police reports of a wreck in front of Shop Rite on Blackwood Clementon Rd.  After hearing one vehicle was directly on top of another the Rescue headed out just as the assignment was toned.  The picture shows the final resting place of the Jeep after being struck from behind and sent airborne by the white Toyota.  Beaverbrook was special called for the heavy wrecker and luckily there were no injuries or entrapment.  At 0039 the Friday night crew responded to Charlie Brown’s restaurant for an alarm system to find rain water coming through a detector.  We were up again at 0200 for another wreck on the Black Horse Pike.  This vehicle left the road, struck several signs, overturned and struck a vacant structure.  The single occupant was uninjured and building required no immediate shoring.  At 0730 10 members headed for training at Station 33 for the NJSP Marine Safety Class.  At 0941 the Rescue was special called to Washington Township for an MVA/Rescue at Egg Harbor and Daytona.  Extrication was complete just before our arrival.

ONE FIRE SPRINKLER HEAD STOPS HOUSE FIRE

** A HOME BURNS EVERY 79 SECONDS IN AMERICA **

** 3,000 PEOPLE DIE EVERY YEAR IN HOME FIRES **

** NEARLY 14,000 PEOPLE ARE INJURED IN HOME FIRES EVERY YEAR **

On April 25, 2007, fire units from Blackwood, Chews Landing and Erial responded to a reported dwelling fire at 2049 Broad Acres Drive.  Responding firefighters arrived to find that a single automatic fire suppression sprinkler head extinguished a fire on the second floor of a three story single family town home located on the end of a six unit row.  No one was home at the time of the fire.

Smoke and fire damage was limited to several floor tiles under a burned portable fan.  Firefighters placed salvage covers to minimize water damage.  A wedding album in the same room as the fire required drying out but was saved from certain destruction by the sprinkler system.  If not for the fire suppression sprinkler system, this fire would have grown and spread unchecked, destroying anything and anyone in its path.

For approximately $2 per square foot, or less than the cost of a typical carpet upgrade, automatic fire suppression sprinkler systems can contain and often extinguish a fire in its early stages, before deadly heat and smoke build up.

The following is the average fire death and dollar damage rate in the 15 years since Scottsdale, Arizona passed an ordinance requiring fire sprinkler systems within every new home.
