MVC REQUIRES DOOR
REMOVAL ON RT. 42
|
On
Saturday, December 24, 2005, at 0311 hours, the Blackwood Fire
Company (Rescue 84), the Chews Landing Fire Company (Rescue 82), the
Blenheim Fire Company (Engine 83), the Deptford Fire Department
(Rescue 93) the Gloucester Township Emergency Medical Alliance
(Squad 805 & 806), the Virtua Health Systems Mobile Intensive Care
Unit (Medic 41), along with the New Jersey State Police were
dispatched to New Jersey State Highway 42 (N.J.S.H. #42) in the area
of mile post 8, southbound, for a reported motor vehicle crash.
Initial reports provided by the Camden County Communications Center
indicated they had received reports of a three vehicle crash in
which one of the vehicles had overturned and that the occupants were
entrapped. Upon the arrival of Chief John Vannoni (8401), it was
determined that only one person was possibly entrapped; with the
sole occupants from both of the other involved vehicles, including
the overturned vehicle, denying injury. Initially, E.M.S. personnel
made patient access through the passenger side door of the
automobile containing the one possibly trapped person and initially
planned on removing him through the same door. After examining the
situation more closely it was determined that removal of the
driver’s door would be necessary to accommodate proper patient
stabilization and packaging prior to removal from the vehicle. The
crew from R-846, along with personnel from R-826, made quick work of
removing this door. Crews from Engine 832 and 842 provided fire
protection during the extrication. The operation was completed by
0339 with all companies cleared from the scene at 0411 hours. The
cause of this crash is being investigated by the NJ State Police,
Bellmawr Barracks. |

MVC/VEHICLE FIRE
IN THE ESTATES
On Friday
evening, December 16, 2005, at 2218, Engine 84 was summoned to 342
Frankford for a vehicle fire. Initial reports given to first
responding E-841 was a vehicle smoking on the front lawn. While
enroute, an updated report from County Communications was that
GTPD had a vehicle fire with an exposure of a dwelling. Based on
the report and monitoring police transmissions, E-841 requested
the box be filled for a dwelling fire. E-841 arrived at 2222 and
reported a vehicle fire that appeared to have been extinguished by
GTPD and to hold the assignment to Station 84. Crews from E-841
and R-846 disconnected the battery and assisted GTPD with lighting
for the investigation. The vehicle had apparently been taken
without the owners consent by some juveniles who were allegedly
consuming alcohol. The vehicle struck a utility pole and spun out
on the front lawn. Three juveniles were spotted fleeing the
scene. GTPD caught up with the juveniles who were subsequently
taken into custody. Station 84 went available at 2304.

TOWNHOUSE FIRE IN
CHERRYWOOD
On Saturday, December 3, 2005, at 2231 hours, Station 84, 82, 86,
and Gloucester Township EMS, and Medic 46 were dispatched to the
area of 306 Cherrywood Drive for a reported dwelling fire.
Initial reports indicated that people might be trapped. GTPD
arrived in the area and located the fire to be at #3 Blue Jay
Drive. Police also determined all occupants had been removed and
were accounted for. Upon the arrival of 8401, heavy smoke was
evident from all openings of one (1) two-story unit of a five (5)
unit townhouse building; unit #3. 8601 had arrived just prior to
8401 and was assigned to Division "C". Access to division "C" was
hampered due to privacy fences and had to initially be made
through exposure units. TL-844 arrived and was assigned to
division "A". Engine 821 laid in and was assigned division
"A". Two initial attack lines (1 ¾") were deployed from 821 and
initiated an attack from division "A". A back-up line (3") was
deployed from 821 and operated in division "A". Engine 841
supplied 821 from Cherrywood and Edgewood Place. Engine 863
was assigned to establish a secondary water supply to division
"A". This supply, from Cherrywood and Summit Court, was made to
TL-844. Engine 866 deployed a 2" attack line to division "C"
and was also supplied from 863. Initially division "C" was not
authorized to initiate any attack from division "C" due to the
possibility of creating opposing hose streams. E-841's crew
(2nd 1 ¾" from 821) reported a partial collapse of the floor #1
floor just inside the division "A" entry. The emergency
evacuation signal was sounded to ensure all personnel on the
fireground were aware that no interior firefighting was to be
conducted. The line at division "C" was now authorized to
initiate an attack and the three lines from division "A" were
operated from the exterior. Additionally, TL-844 operated their
bucket monitors into the attic area that had become involved in
fire, apparently through autoexposure into the soffit areas.
The fire was placed under control at 2300 hours. One dog was
discovered deceased in the basement. Animal control on location
and removed same. The American Red Cross was notified by
GTPD and providing aid to the displaced residents. The
company was made available at 0305.

MEMBERS PREPARE FOR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARADE
|
On
Saturday November 26, 2005 members gathered to prepare Station 1 for
the annual Blackwood Fire Company Christmas Parade. The task was
completed quickly with over 60 people volunteering to help. 32
firefighters and Auxiliary members were assisted by another 30
family members and friends. Decorating and preparing the Station
was previously a dreaded chore around the station. The Auxiliary
changed that several years ago by getting the families involved and
preparing a big meal. The station was ready to go in just hours and
the station was staffed for immediate response with a Chief and
crews for the Tower, Rescue and an Engine for 5 hours. Thanks to
all who participated! |

had stopped a motorist for unspecified reasons, just as the officer
was about to exit his vehicle, he was struck from behind by another
motorist causing the cruiser to strike the vehicle in front.
Engines 842 and 841 assisted the squad with patient packaging and
disconnecting of the batteries on the vehicles. The officer and the
driver of the stopped vehicle were transported to local area
hospitals where they were reportedly listed in stable condition.

at 1433 hours, the Blackwood Fire Company (Engine 84), the Chews
Landing Fire Company (Engine 82), and the Blenheim Fire Company
(Engine 83), along with the New Jersey State Police were dispatched
to New Jersey State Highway 42 (N.J.S.H. #42) in the area of exit 8
northbound for a reported vehicle fire. Reports provided by the
Camden County Communications Center, after the apparatus began
responding, indicated they had received reports of a bus on fire
along the northbound shoulder near exit 8. Upon the arrival of
Chief John Vannoni (8401), a New Jersey Transit bus, with fire
showing from the area of the passenger side rear windows, was
observed. Due to a lack of water supply along the highway,
additional engine companies from Lambs Terrace Fire Company (Engine
85), Gloucester County Washington Township (Engine 10-1) and
Deptford Fire Department (Engine 9-3) were requested to initiate a
water shuttle operation. With the assistance of two engine
companies (E-821 and E-866), Chief Joe Reichert (8201) was assigned
to establish a continuous water supply from hydrants located off the
highway but accessible through a parking lot adjacent to the
incident. R-826 arrived on location first at 1443 hours and was
assigned to make the initial attack. Engine 841 arrived
approximately 30 seconds later and was assigned to supply 826 and
assist in the deployment of a back-up line for fire suppression.
The fire was knocked down and brought under control through the use
of the tank water brought onto the highway. The water supply
operation was terminated just prior to the lines being charged. The
bus was occupied by only the driver at the time of the fire. No
injuries were sustained as a result of this incident. The cause of
this fire is being investigated by local and county fire marshals

ALL HANDS
BUILDING FIRE ON CHURCH STREET
On
Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at 0833 hours, Station 84 was
dispatched to the Century 21 Nicholson Realty Office, 43 West
Church Street for an automatic fire alarm activation. Tower
Ladder 844 responded with a crew of three at 0839 hours and
arrived on location, just around the corner from Blackwood’s
Central Avenue fire station, less than one minute later finding a
two story single family dwelling converted to office space.
Nothing was initially showing from the building on Divisions A, B
and C however a slight odor of smoke was noted within the area.
While a building occupant saw fit to activate the building’s fire
alarm via a manual pull station, no one within the building,
including the occupant who activated the fire alarm evacuated.
Fire Marshal Keith Kemery (Tower Ladder 844’s Command) was advised
of smoke on the second floor and ordered that the box be filled
out for a building fire at 0843 hours. Station 83 (Blenheim Fire
Company), Station 82 (Chews Landing Fire Company) and Squad 805
(Gloucester Township EMS Alliance) were added to the assignment.
Tower Ladder 844’s crew (Kemery and Firefighter James Ploski)
investigated the occupant’s report finding intensifying light to
medium smoke throughout the second floor. Primary and secondary
searches were conducted and approximately ten (10) people were
evacuated from the building. Tower Ladder 844’s crew was unable
to locate the seat of the fire or access to the buildings attic
during search operations. Upon exiting the building for a hose
line, Tower Ladder 844’s crew noticed smoke had begun to show from
a Division C attic vent. The “All Hands” box was struck at 0849
hours adding Camden County’s Incident Safety Assistance Team and
Rescue 938 (Deptford Fire Department) for a F.A.S.T. Company while
moving Ladder 854 (Lambs Terrace Fire Company) and Rescue Engine
626 (Pine Hill Fire Department) up to cover Station 84.
Firefighter Rich Jones (Tower Ladder 844’s Chauffer) hand
stretched a five inch supply line back to the hydrant in front of
27 West Church Street. Engine 841 arrived from the east at 0846
hours and picked up Tower Ladder 844’s supply line. Chief Joe
Reichert (Chief 8201) arrived on location at 0849 hours,
established a command post on the A/B corner of the fire building
and assumed incident command. Engine 821 arrived on location from
the west and picked up a secondary hydrant at the corner of
Harrison Avenue and West Church Street. Engine 842 arrived and
positioned to pump Engine 821’s supply line. Rescue 846 arrived
and positioned on the west side of the fire ground while Tower
Ladder 824 set up on Division B and laddered the roof. Members
from Engines 841, 842 and 821 as well as Rescue 846 formed up with
Tower Ladder 844’s crew to advance one (1) 2 ½” and one (1) 13/4”
water line to the second floor. Scans with thermal imaging
cameras were initially negative. Unable to find an access hatch
to the attic space, interior crew members opened the drop and
drywall ceilings within the second floor foyer area to locate fire
within the attic space while Tower Ladder 824’s crew ventilated
via attic fan vents on the roof. Once located, the fire was
quickly extinguished and placed under control at 0905. Engine 822
reported to the established manpower pool and performed
miscellaneous operations as needed. Rescue Engine 626 was special
called for cascade service at 0938 hours and Station 5700 (Camden
County Fire Police) assisted Gloucester Township Police with
traffic control.
Squad
805 transported one (1) firefighter to Kennedy Hospital in
Stratford for heat exhaustion where he was treated and released.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the local and
Camden County Fire Marshal’s offices.

BLACKWOOD
RESPONDS TO REPORTED GARAGE FIRE
|
On
Sunday, September 11, 2005, at 1408 hours, the Blackwood Fire
Company (Station 84), the Blenheim Fire Company (Station83) and
the Gloucester Township Emergency Medical Alliance (Squad 805)
were dispatched to #136 State Street for a reported dwelling fire.
Initial reports, provided by the
Camden
County
Communications
Center
, indicated they had received a report of an attached garage fire.
Upon
the arrival of Assistant Chief John Carlin (8402) light smoke was
issuing from the garage and a small area of fire was evident just
inside the overhead door opening.
Additionally, the strong odor of gasoline was evident
throughout the area; it was quickly learned, during the initial
interview of the homeowner, that he had kicked a plastic can of
gasoline over which was then ignited by a charcoal smoker being
operated just outside the garage.
Tower Ladder 844, which is stationed just around the corner
from this location, was the first arriving unit and, rather then
awaiting the arrival of Engine 841, Chief Carlin had TL 844
operate as a quint and place their 1 ¾” bumper line in service.
Engine 841 was assigned to establish a water
supply and to deploy a back up line from the engine.
The small fire was rapidly controlled by the one line from
TL-844; with no extension or damage sustained to the living space
of the residence. No
injuries were sustained as a result of this incident. |

SINGLE VEHICLE
CRASH TRAPS ONE ALONG ROUTE 42 IN BLACKWOOD, NJ
|
On
Saturday, September 3, 2005, at 0106 hours, the Blackwood Fire
Company (Rescue 84), the Chews Landing Fire Company (Rescue 82),
the Blenheim Fire Company (Engine 83), the Gloucester Township
Emergency Medical Alliance (Squad 806), the Virtua Health Systems
Mobile Intensive Care Unit (Medic 41), along with the New Jersey
State Police were dispatched to New Jersey State Highway 42 (N.J.S.H.
#42) in the area of mile post 9.7, southbound, for a reported
motor vehicle crash. Initial
reports provided by the
Camden
County
Communications
Center
indicated they had received reports of a vehicle which had
overturned and at least one person was trapped.
Upon the arrival of Chief Vannoni (8401) a single vehicle
crash was discovered at the base of the berm, which was
approximately 3-5 feet below the level of the road service.
The vehicle, a pickup truck, had struck a tree, pushing it
to the ground beneath of it, overturned and came to rest against
another tree. The
driver of this vehicle was extensively entangled between the
driver’s door, the steering column and dashboard.
Additionally, gasoline was leaking from the vehicle fuel
tank that had been breached.
Rescue
826 arrived first at 0117 hours with Rescue 846 arriving one
minute later. Captain
Al Adomonis (8204) was assigned as the extrication officer.
Personnel from both R-826 and R-846 removed trees and brush
from the area and performed vehicle stabilization tasks prior to
both rescues going into service to disentangle the trapped
patient. Patient
access was gained through the passenger side door with A.L.S. and
B.L.S. personnel assuming patient care from within the badly
crushed vehicle. Removal
of the driver’s side door and some work with a ram completed
disentanglement of the driver. Engine 842 and Engine 832 arrived
simultaneously after the rescues and were both assigned the task
of fire suppression. A
foam blanket was applied to the gasoline spill to suppress the
flammable vapors and a 1 ¾ inch line was stretched and charged.
Additional rescues from the Erial Fire Company (Rescue 86)
and Deptford Township Fire Department (Rescue 93) were requested
to provide additional personnel for relief crews; as the extended
operation and the high temperatures were obviously
taking its toll on the initial crews.
An additional Squad (
Deptford
Township
) was also dispatched to establish a rehabilitation area.
In addition to all the normal problems encountered at a
crash of this nature, the entire area appeared to be covered in
poison ivy or poison sumac. The
patient was removed at 0216 hours and transported by ground to
Cooper
Trauma
Center
in
Camden
. Engine 842 remained
on location until the vehicle was removed from the area and went
available at 0302 hours. The
cause of the crash is being investigated by the New Jersey State
Police, Bellmawr Barracks. No emergency
services personnel sustained injuries as a result of
this operation.

The response was upgraded to a Trench Rescue Assignment and
Technical Rescue Teams 232 (Waterford Township Fire Department)
and 51 (Gloucester City Fire Department) were added to the
assignment shortly after the initial alarm when the Camden County
Fire & Ambulance Communications received additional calls
reporting a construction worker trapped waste deep in a collapsed
trench. First
arriving Rescue 626 confirmed a construction worker trapped waste
deep by a trench collapse in a field approximately 300 hundred
feet of the roadway.
At
0955 hours Rescue 846 and Tower Ladder 844 responded on a special
call. Upon arrival,
rescue and truck members assembled hand tools and equipment and
reported to the forward manpower staging area for assignment.
Upon arrival at the manpower staging area, both companies
were immediately deployed to perform support functions, assisting
technical rescue team members with deployment of timber and
equipment as well as set up a cutting station.
Hot,
warm and cold zones were established early into the incident in an
effort to control the area immediately around the unstable trench
which measured approximately eight feet wide by twenty feet long
by twenty feet deep. The
trapped worker was successfully extracted from the collapse
approximately one and a half hours after the initial alarm showing
no immediate signs of injury as a result of the collapse. |

Company
members standby just outside the established warm zone, ready to
deploy equipment as directed.

CALLED FOR TASK FORCE ASSIGNMENT IN GLOUCESTER COUNTY
|
On Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at 1630 hours, Rescue 846 (with 6
personnel) , along with Camden County Field Comm 2, Ladder 114
(Audubon), Engine 753 (Runnemede), and Rescue Engine 325 were
requested to respond to the quarters of Gloucester County Station
7-3 (Westville) for a Task Force assignment. Earlier in the
day, a gasoline tanker carrying 6000+ gallons of product had been
involved in a MVC rollover and had spilled approximately 2500
gallons in Greenwich township. Due to the heat and labor
intensive nature of this incident, many companies from Gloucester
County had been called in to assist in the containment and cleanup
of the spill therefore, leaving their locals covered with minimal
staffing. This task force, was one of two, and was covering
most of the north end of the county. While covering R-846
responded to the only call for service, a fractures call in
Westville. The task force stood down and returned at 2030. |

the Black Horse Pike (Rt. 168) and Fairfax Ave for a highway
hazard. 8402 (Assistant Chief Carlin), R-846 and

himself and fled the scene prior to police and fire department
arrival. Crews from R-846 and E-841 stabilized the vehicle
